Binibining Pilipinas World Janina San Miguel formally quit last Monday, September 27, 2008. The replacement of Bb. Pilipinas World is Dannielle Castano, a 19-year-old Filipino American.
Dannielle Castano was born in the US and has been living in the Philippines for just over a year.
Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) announced Monday that San Miguel quit as the country's representative to the 2008 Ms. World beauty pageant due to personal reasons.
"The untimely demise of her grandfather, among other personal reasons, has caused her undue stress, thus hindering her from fulfilling her duties for the said title," the BPCI said in a statement.
"In accordance with BPCI rules and regulations, 1st Runner-Up Danielle Castaño will replace Ms. San Miguel as the official Philippine representative to the Ms. World 2008 pageant," it added.
"BPCI wishes to express its gratitude to Ms. San Miguel for this act of graciousness and concern for the country. They also wish her well in her future endeavors," the company said.
ABS-CBN's TV Patrol said Tuesday that with only one-and-a-half months left before Ms. World contestants have to be in Johannesburg, there are speculations that San Miguel did not resign but was forced to do so due to her lack of abilities in representing the country. -courtesy of abs-cbn

Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) bans 56 milk products. They released a partial list of milk and milk products last Friday, September 26, 2008 undergoing testing for possible melamine contamination.
The ban will remain in effect until BFAD releases results of the test in October.

Other importing countries have also banned Chinese milk products as the Chinese government conducted a crackdown on all milk manufacturers that are using the toxic chemical melamine.

Melamine - contaminated milks from China: Banned
The Bureau of Food and Drugs on Monday, September 22, 2008 ordered stops sale of 2 Chinese milk brand Yili and Mengiu products from Chinese major dairy companies Mengniu Dairy Co and Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group after conducting a test having a melamine - contaminated that left thousands of infants hospitalized.
Melamine is a non-alimentary industrial chemical which causes kidney stones and other renal damage. Decreased frequency of urination as well as presence of blood in urine are the symptoms of melamine intakes. Last week, the Chinese government’s quality watchdog released an initial list of milk manufacturing companies suspected of using melamine in their milk products.

Nintendo's profit per employee
If you work at Nintendo, you know how to make money. For Nintendo, that is.
According to the Financial Times, each employee at the game giant earns the company a whopping $1.6 million in profit. That number trumps the 2007 estimations for both high-powered investment bank group Goldman-Sachs ($1.2 million) and Internet powerhouse Google ($626,000).
The FT attributes Nintendo's profit per employee success to the fact that the company only employs about 3,000 permanent workers, yet routinely outsells the competition with its enormously popular DS and Wii platforms. Outsourcing helps, too -- the Wii is manufactured elsewhere, and many high-profile games are handled by outside developers with Nintendo producers overseeing the projects.
But working with Mario isn't necessarily all its cracked up to be. The FT article further reports that while each Nintendo employee generates well over a million for the company, the average salary is a far more humble $90,000, with the bulk of profits going to shareholders. By contrast, the average Goldman employee walks with over $600,000, nearly half of what they generate. Which game would you rather play?

Ateneo vs. La Salle tickets
The game one of the UAAP Season 71 Championship Showdown between Ateneo and La Salle will be on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at The Big Dome!
But scalpers at the Araneta are also expected to proliferate. The NBI said that more people that are likely to turn to scalpers for tickets, even if the original selling price is doubled or even tripled.
A security guard of the Araneta Coliseum and five others were arrested last Sunday for “scalping” during the Final Four bout. Twenty-five tickets were confiscated from the scalpers.
Arrested were Jabin Brian Valsorable, security guard of the Big Dome, and a resident of barangay Bulihan, Famy, Laguna; Samuel Velasco, a resident of 305 Balayong, Malolos, Bulacan; Jerry Ysmael of Block 70-71, Ampalaya Street, Conception, Marikina City; and Rene Sioco of 2473 Carmacelli Street, Singalong, Manila.

The most heated rivalry will come alive again -- the fourth time -- within a span of 10 years.
Ateneo and La Salle first faced each other in the UAAP finals in 1988 when the Eagles clawed the Archers to strike first blood and claim the championship. The games were then held at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Come 2001, it was the Archers' turn as they defeated their rivals. By then the UAAP games were already being played at the Big Dome.
Ateneo then ended its 14-year title drought in 2002. At the losing end was nobody else but the Archers.
In 2007, the bitter rivals clashed once more for the college hoops finals. This time, the Archers made it sure that they would emerge victorious against the Loyola dribblers.
Laarni Losada - Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 Big winner
With a total text votes of 651,696 or 35.21%, Laarni Losada - a 22-year-old student from Sultan Kudarat wins the ABS-CBN's top rated Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2.
Bugoy Bogaya, a canteen janitor from Camarines sur is the second placer with 547,760 text votes.It was an emotional victory for Laarni who struggled in the early part of the contest and was in danger of elimination in her very first week in the academy. She also got in spats with fellow scholars because of her moods but always impressed the audience and the judges week after week because of her performance.
After being declared Grand Star Dreamer, Laarni was in tears as she sang the show-stopping "Manalig Ka", which was included in the scholars' compilation album "Pinoy Dream Academy Season Two Scholars Sing Cayabyab." Her prize package includes a laptop computer, component and LCD television from Sony, kitchen showcase from Whirlpool, P1.5 million worth of Crystal Clear purified water store franchise, a brand new house and lot from Globe Asiatique and a check worth P1 million from ABS-CBN.
Second-placer Bugoy sang "Climb Every Mountain" and gave an emotional speech to his supporters for bringing him one step closer to his dreams. "Mangarap po tayo. Kahit simpleng tao pwedeng mangarap!" he said as his fans cheered.
Balladeer and former Philippine Idol finalist Miguel Mendoza placed third with 13.69 percent or 253,402 votes. Mendoza, who entered in the academy with his girlfriend Bea Munoz, had been in danger of elimination several times but was always saved through text votes.
Five-time Star Scholar Liezel Garcia placed fourth in the contest with 13.36 percent or a total of 247,346 votes. Garcia, an early favorite in the contest, thanked the mentors for the training while inside the academy.
Van Roxas placed fifth with 6.06 percent or a total of 112,065 votes. The 18-year-old Roxas (real name Van Louelle Pojas) had revealed early in the contest that he did not tell his mother about how long he would stay inside the academy since he had to skip school to join. He was later prevailed upon to stay in the academy by the PDA mentors.
In last place was Cristina Pastor, 21, with 36,487 votes.
Lozada is the second PDA scholar to win the top prize. The first was Yeng Constantino in 2006.
Pacquiao - Dela Hoya fight latest update
Manny Pacquiao leaves Philippines (Sept. 14 night) to start training for fight against Oscar Dela Hoya. The Filipino Boxing Hero is set to undergo 10 weeks of heavy training in the Wild Card gym with Coach Freddie Roach. Manny said that he and coach Roach willbe working on maintaining his speed while bulking up for the fight.
Manny and Orcar agreed to fight in the 147 - pound limit division.
Earlier reports said TR, GBP and MGM are placing 5,000 tickets each, reducing the number of tickets available to the public to no more than 2,000. The MGM Grand seats 17,000 people.
Tickets are priced $1,500, $1,000, $750, $500 and $250, but Arum admitted that no ticket will be available at face value anymore.
Brokers and online ticket sellers have started peddling tickets that are expected to sell as much as $42,000 for the precious floor-seats.
During the box-office hit De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather fight last year, gate receipts reportedly reached $20 million.
Arum, in a recent radio interview, said there’s a big possibility the fight could top that record mark.

UFC's Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell will visit Manila
Philippine mixed martial arts fans will surely be in for a treat as Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) pays a visit to Manila on September 21.
Details of the light heavyweight champ's Manila visit have yet to be released.
However, Liddell may treat Filipino MMA enthusiasts to a rare fans' day and media guestings judging from a similar event held for Filipino-American Brandon "The Truth" Vera in April.
The Iceman's most recent fight was against Rashad Evans during "UFC 88: Breakthrough" in Atlanta, Georgia.
Evans won by knocking out Liddell at 1:51 in the second round of their 205-pound light heavyweight battle.
“You can’t fight him going for takedowns all night. That’s the way you get knocked out. I wanted to beat him at his own game,” Evans told UFC's Thomas Gerbasi after the fight that saw him improving his record to 17-0-1.
Liddell fell to 21-6 following the loss to Evans.

“He’s ready for discharge at hospital any time now…we’ll just celebrate with the nurses who took good care of him his entire stay," mensahe ni Pia.
Pinasalamatan niya ang lahat ng nagdasal at nagbigay ng suporta sa kanilang pamilya sa pinagdadaanang pagsubok.
Habang patuloy sa pagpapagaling si Kiko, ang mga kasamahan naman niya sa noontime show na “Eat Bulaga" ay naghahanda ng isang benefit concert para sa kanya sa Sabado sa Circu Timog, Quezon City.

While tickets are being peddled on the Internet, they haven’t gone on sale as yet since there are other big fights ahead of the de la Hoya – Pacquiao card on December 6. One of those looking for fight tickets is the Philippines No. 1 Davis Cup tennis star Cecil Mamiit.
In an e-mail, Mamiit told Nathanielsz, “I’m in search for some tickets for the fight. I have a group of friends and family planning a trip to see the fight and we really would love to get hold of tickets to make the trip worth it. We are willing to pay a reasonable price.”
Mamiit said he was “just seeing if you have any suggestions on how we could get a hold of some and we would really appreciate the help.”
Both Pacquiao’s lawyer, Franklin “Jeng” Gacal, and close friend Rex “Wakee” Salud have already been besieged by requests for tickets indicating growing interest in the fight despite sharply divided opinions on whether the fight is right or whether its all because the price is right.
September 2008 Bar Exam Result
A record of 6,533 law graduates are set to take the September 2008 Bar Exam to be held on all four Sundays of this month (September 7, 14, 21, and 28) at the De La Salle University (DLSU) in Taft Avenue, Manila. The 2008 Committee on Bar Examinations is chaired by Justice Dante O. Tinga.
The Court conducts the Bar examinations pursuant to Article VIII, Sec. 5 of the Constitution which provides that it shall have the power to promulgate rules governing the admission to the practice of law.
The Rules of Court provide that “a candidate may be deemed to have passed his examination successfully if he has obtained a general average of 75% in all subjects without falling below 50% in any subject.” In determining the average, subjects in the examinations are given the following relative weights: Political and International Law, 15%; Labor and Social Legislation, 10%; Civil Law, 15%; Taxation, 10%; Mercantile Law, 15%; Criminal Law, 10%; Remedial Law, 20%; and Legal Ethics and Practical Exercises, 5%, for a total of 100%.

Ely Buendia latest update
Ely Buendia was officially discharged from the hospital last Friday, September 5, after staying for almost a week following another angioplasty procedure to clear his blocked arteries. Ely underwent the same procedure twice last year after suffering a heart attack during an out-of-town gig with his current band, Pupil.
In a taped interview with The Buzz which was aired yesterday, September 7, Ely's partner and manager Diane Ventura disclaimed earlier reports that the band leader suffered another heart attack.
"He underwent angioplasty because nagkaroon ulit ng cholesterol buildup dun sa main artery," informed Diane. "It's not actually a heart attack."
Diane also added that Ely was asked by the doctors to rest for two months for him to recover fully.
The iconic singer-songwriter was admitted after experiencing chest pains while in the middle of the Eraserheads much-anticipated reunion concert held at the Bonifacio Global City open field in Taguig last August 30.
Ely's recent health dilemma was being linked to stress and exhaustion—both physically and emotionally. Two days before the reunion concert, Ely's mother, Mrs. Lisette Buendia, succumbed to cardiac arrest. All the preparations leading to the concert plus the loss of a loved one ultimately took its toll on Buendia—who still managed to finish the band's first set composed of 15 songs—on the night of the actual concert.
ON THE WAY TO RECOVERY. The Buzz also managed to get a few words from some of Ely's closest friends who were able to visit him at the hospital.
"Last time na bumisita kami nakakalakad siya, nakakapagsalita, kumakain, nakakapag-joke around," said film director Joyce Bernal.
According to renowned script writer Ricky Lee, who served as Ely's teacher when the young musician was still a film major student at the University of the Philippines, the incident was a blessing in disguise since it led to the discovery of the serious health malady.
"Sabi nga niya sa amin, it was a good thing din naman na nangyari ‘yon kasi nagkaka-blockage na rin 'yong isang artery niya, so nadiskubre. Mabuti't maagapan," said Lee.
Even Buendia's former bandmates from the Eraserheads likewise paid a visit, proving that the relationship among the four is now cordial as compared before.
Diane thanked all the fans who prayed for Ely's recovery and also for understanding the situation, which unfortunately cut short the reunion concert last week.
"He's in stable condition, we're expecting a 100 percent full recovery. We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the fans. I'm grateful na the fans are so understanding," she quipped.
Asked for a message, Diane advised Ely in closing: "Stay in shape, drink your medicine. Wala munang traba-trabaho, kahit mamulubi, importante ang health. Health is wealth.

Longest Beer Bar: San Miguel Beer Octoberfest 2008
Pinoys try to set Guinness for the longest beer bar. It may only be September but this has not stopped partygoers and beer lovers from joining San Miguel Corp.'s (SMC) "Oktoberfest 2008" in Manila as the country attempts to break the world record for setting up the longest beer bar in the world.
Local beer lovers trooped to Ortigas Friday night where free beer were offered as 200 bars were set up from San Miguel Avenue to St. Francis in Mandaluyong City.
The set up was measured at around 600 meters, 360 meters longer than Guinness record-holder Taiwan.
The Philippines is also trying to set a Guinness record for the most number of people toasting for a beer event.
Oktoberfest organizers said that aside from free beers, thousands of Friday’s "beer troopers" will be treated to a free concert where at least 40 rock bands are scheduled to play. The main feature presents alternative rock band Third Eye Blind.
"Sobrang espesyal ng gabing ito dahil lahat ng magkakaibigan magkakasama ngayon dito para magsaya dahil sasali tayo sa Guinness World record at may tampok pa na foreign band," said Assie Carpio, San Miguel Corp. Brand Manager.
There will also be a fireworks display at the party site starting 9 p.m.

NBI launches Automated Clearance Machine (ACM)
The National Bureau of Investigation or NBI launches Automated Clearance Machines (ACMs) September 3, Wednesday at Carriedo branch, Carriedo Street in Sta. Cruz, Manila. You can now get your clearance faster from NBI.
An ACM is like an automated teller machine (ATM), except that instead of cash it dispenses your clearance – that is, if you have no criminal record. And you have to pay first the usual fee, by inserting bills or coins in the machine.
An ACM works with a clearance renewal card (CRC) that you simply feed into the machine so that transactions start quickly.
The ACM uses facial and fingerprint biometrics system to check on the personal information of the individual applying for NBI clearance renewal.
If the individual’s biometrics matches that of the machine, it will proceed to the database to see if there is any criminal record in the name of the ACM cardholder.
If there's no record, the machine automatically prints an NBI clearance, while updating the chip afterwards with the latest information.
In case of "hits," which means you have a record, the system will check the information on the chip to see if the records had already been cleared previously. If so, the m,achine will print a clearance.
If the applicant is not cleared of his or her criminal record or has a namesake, he will be instructed to proceed to CRC cardholders’ fast lane for further records verification by the NBI.
The ACM is made possible through Mega Data Corp., the NBI’s systems integration company and technical systems provider since 1974.
In the 1990’s, the NBI, through technical assistance from Mega Data, installed manned instant renewal kiosks inside malls and regional and district offices of NBI nationwide, allowing the same-day release of clearances.
Then in 2005, NBI and Mega Data launched the NBI clearance on wheels, a mobile clearance processing system that brought clearance services to remote areas.
Mega Data is also the company behind the license renewal system of the Land Transportation Office (LTO).
